HDTV converter boxes are boxes that convert a digital signal into something that is compatible with a non digital TV. In 2005, the government mandated that all TVs must be either digital, or have a converter box that allows them to receive digital signal some years in the future. This, subsequently, meant that all programming would need to switch over to a digital signal, and that there would no longer be any analog broadcasting over the airwaves. The reason for this was public safety. Additionally, some websites offered HDTV converter box coupons that would allow HD programming to be watched on a non HDTV. This was a benefit for non HD users because some channels only broadcast programming in HD, and without this box they would never be able to see it. The coupons are very easy to apply for, and even easier to obtain and use. Some websites offer coupons that can be used at popular stores like Best Buy or Walmart, giving you the power to go and get the box.
